FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How does IPL work?

Light energy from IPL is absorbed by the melanin in the hair, which then turns to heat and destroys the hair cells.

What is the difference between IPL hair removal, and laser hair removal?

Both IPL and laser hair removal uses light, and in turn heat, to destroy the hair from the root. The main difference between IPL hair removal and laser hair removal is the light spectrum used. IPL uses a wide range of wavelengths of light to produce a single white flash, whereas lasers use one wavelength of light which creates a single beam.

Do you have a money back guarantee?

Yes, we do! We have absolute confidence in providing you with the best at-home IPL Laser Hair Removal Handset in the world. That’s why we’re proud to offer our day 90-day 100% Money-Back Guarantee.

Does it hurt?

One of the biggest advantages of IPL over other types of laser is that it is far less painful. Most customers explain the feeling as a warm sensation on the skin

Are there any side effects to IPL?

When using the handset as recommended, side effects are rare. Redness and swelling is the most common side effect from IPL, which will quickly subside after treatment.

Which areas of my body can I use this on?

You can use your handset on your entire body, including your Brazilian and face (just be sure to not get too close to your eyes).

Is it safe?

There have been numerous worldwide studies that demonstrate the safety and effectiveness of IPL for hair removal. Due to this fact, it has become an extremely popular safe and effective method of hair removal at home and in clinics.

Do I need to wear eye protection?

No, it isn't necessary to wear eye protection while using our handset. Our handsets are fitted with a sensor and will not pulse and light unless the entire window is pressed against your skin. That being said you should never try and look directly into the light as it flashes.

Do I need to shave before using this product?

Yes, you should shave the desired areas before using your handset. A close to skin shave is best recommended. The goal is for the light energy to reach the hair follicle as quickly as possible, so shaving beforehand is essential to achieve the best results. The hair follicle does need to be in tact for IPL to be effective. This means no waxing, plucking, threading, epilating etc.

Can I use IPL over tattoos?

You should not IPL over tattoos. The light energy will be more attracted to the pigments in the skin, rather than the melanin in the hair which can cause a reaction in the skin and blistering. You should always go around your tattoos.

How permanent is Laser Hair Removal?

Well, is laser hair removal permanent? When you talk about both "permanent" and "laser clinics", it may get a bit tricky. There is no doubt that Laser Hair Removal may result in permanent hair reduction.

This means that these treatments on specific areas may permanently reduce the total number of body hairs, but it will not result in permanent removal of all hairs.

Furthermore, even after you have gotten the results you desired, ongoing treatments are required to maintain these results.

At Home IPL or Laser Hair Removal?

At Home IPL's have been proven to work for permanent hair reduction results just like those of Laser Clinics.

For all the reasons in this article, we believe At Home IPL is definitely the safer and smarter option.

At Home IPL's can be bought for a one time purchase and last up to 15 years worth of weekly treatments. Some may say that you would prefer to be in the hands of a professional at a clinic, but in this article, we've explained this is not always true.

Others may argue that the Laser Hair Removal machines at Clinics are stronger; this is true, but could you imagine what these machines could do to your skin if something was to go wrong, especially in the hands of an individual with no licensing requirements.

Not to mention, At Home IPL's usually, have an energy output of 4.9J/cm2 which is more than plenty to achieve permanent hair reduction results in a safe manner by individuals who are not licensed, professionals.

Can I use IPL while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Although there is no evidence showing that IPL has negative effects on pregnant or breastfeeding women, we still don’t recommend using our handset as a precaution.

Can I use this product before or after tanning?

If you have recently been sun tanning, we recommend waiting 2 weeks before using your handset. You should wait 48 hours to tan after using your handset. The same applies for sun beds. We advise removing all artificial tan before using our handsets, as the light energy may be more attracted to the pigments in the skin, rather than the melanin in the hair. You can reapply the tan after your session once the skin has relaxed.

Can you get skin cancer from Laser Hair Removal?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states the laser energy in hair removal procedures use non-ionizing radiation. The pulses of light energy used in laser hair removal treatments are only designed to heat and destroy hair follicles. “The light energy from these lasers actually remains superficially, it remains at the level of the skin,” Dr. Whitney Bowe, a dermatologist in New York City told FoxNews.com. No research as of today has shown the light energy from hair removal lasers can cause cancer.

Does Laser Hair Removal last forever?

No, Laser hair removal results do not last forever. You are required to do consistent 'touch ups' in order to maintain results.

How long does Laser Hair Removal take to see results?

Every individual is different, but on average, whether you are using an At Home IPL or receiving Laser treatment at a clinic, some users may see results as early as after the 2nd session, while others may not see results until after the 10th session. We are all different, and everyone reacts differently to laser treatment.

What happens after the first session of Laser Hair Removal?

You might notice redness and/or swelling on the treated areas after your first treatment of Laser Hair Removal.

The specialist might advise you to take some sort of anti-inflammatory tablets or to apply some sort of anti-inflammatory cream (they most likely sell it at their clinic).

To reduce the discomfort and swelling, it's recommended you treat the area with ice. Also, avoid sun exposure after your first treatment; they will advise you to use a specific sunscreen for this.

The average time to avoid sun exposure is around 6 weeks after your treatment, however, you will need to double-check this with the clinic that did your treatment.

Can you tweeze your hair after Laser Hair Removal?

It is not recommended to pluck or epilate the hair after a laser hair removal treatment because your skin will be sensitive and needs time to recover.

You need to remember your skin will be irritated and tweezing over this will not be a good idea.

You should wait at least a week after your session before tweezing. If you are in desperate need of smooth skin, you can, however, shave.

How is the handset powered?

Our handsets are not cordless, and will need to be plugged into the power supply at all times of use. Our handsets come with a 3 metre, 12v power supply.

Does Smartybody IPL work for all hair colours?

Due to the nature of IPL relying on melanin to target the hair follicle, it is not effective on very light blonde, red, or grey coloured hair. For blonde hair the treatment may take longer to take effect but will work with time and consistency, any shade darker will work perfectly!

Does Smartybody IPL work for all skin tones?

IPL is suitable for all but the darkest skin tones. Refer to the skin tone chart below to see whether or not IPL is suitable for you.
